🗞️ Aerospace News
The aerospace field is just as abuzz as ever. Two stories have stood out over the last few weeks and are detailed below.
Also, on a quick side note, Reentry by Eric Berger was released last week. It details SpaceX’s journey of getting Dragon flying and making Falcon 9 the workhorse rocket it is today. It’s a follow-up to Liftoff, a book from a few years ago that detailed the very early days of a scrappy SpaceX trying to get their first rocket to work. Liftoff is one of Anshuk’s favorite books, so we highly recommend it along with Reentry!
Impulse Space Gets a Ton of Cash
Impulse Space, the in-space propulsion system company founded by ex-SpaceX co-founder and bonafide rocket engine whisperer Tom Mueller, just received a massive $150 million funding round led by the Founders Fund. The company provides “space tugs” that help take your satellite from one orbit to another. Since launching many different satellites to low earth orbit with rideshare on large rockets has become common, space tugs have become more important to take the satellites to the more exotic orbits they might need to go to.
Impulse Space already had a successful test flight with their first vehicle, “Mira,” last year and is working towards space tugs that take you to GEO and further. Source: CNBC
Chinese Lunar Spacesuits Revealed
China has been steadily working towards its first steps on the lunar surface, which it plans to take by 2030. This past week, they took a giant leap forward with the reveal of the EVA (extra-vehicular activity) spacesuits their astronauts will use to walk on the lunar surface. The space suit seems to be equipped with various cameras, flexible joints for mobility, and red accents for aesthetics. Source: CNN
The US got its spacesuit reveal last March 2023 when Axiom Space revealed the AxEMU suits. With delays in Artemis (both SLS and Starship have much more to prove before they’re ready for the manned moon landing), we may have another space race to the Moon in the future!
